Frequently asked questions.
Whether you are planning an asset sale or preparing to bid, these answers explain the basics. Details can vary by auction, so always review the terms posted with a specific sale.
Selling with REAL
REAL focuses on business closures, heavy equipment, vehicles, commercial assets, personal property, collections, and estate-related sales. The best auction strategy depends on the quantity, type, condition, location, and likely buyer market for the assets.
No. REAL offers three levels of participation: full service, a collaborative approach where responsibilities are shared, and a platform partnership for capable sellers who handle photography, cataloging, preview, and loadout while REAL provides professional oversight and auction-platform access.
Timing depends on the number of assets, cataloging needs, site access, marketing plan, and sale format. After an initial review, REAL can recommend a realistic schedule that allows enough time to prepare the catalog and reach likely buyers.
Costs depend on the service level, labor, marketing budget, auction format, asset location, and other project requirements. REAL develops a proposal around the seller’s objectives rather than forcing every sale into the same package.
Marketing & auction formats
Buyers cannot bid on an auction they do not know exists. Strong marketing creates awareness among likely purchasers, increases bidder participation, and gives the assets a better opportunity to achieve competitive results.
The campaign can include AI-assisted research and creative, social media, direct mail, email outreach, contacts developed through past sales, sponsored placement on auction platforms, and direct outreach to potential buyers. The mix is based on the assets, buyer audience, timeframe, geography, and seller’s budget.
Yes. REAL can use a single platform or multiple platforms simultaneously when broader distribution is appropriate. The goal is to make participation easy for qualified buyers and bring the strongest bidder audience to the sale.
Live-only auctions accept bids onsite. Timed online auctions close according to a published schedule. Simulcast auctions combine onsite bidding with live internet participation. Webcast auctions are called live by an auctioneer for online bidders without onsite bidding.
Registration & bidding
Open the auction catalog and follow the registration instructions for the platform hosting that sale. You may need to create an account and complete identity or payment verification before you can bid.
No. Registration allows you to participate. You are only making a purchase commitment when you place a bid and become the winning bidder under the auction’s terms.
When a preview is available, its date, time, and location will be included in the auction information. Buyers should inspect items or ask questions before bidding because auction assets are generally sold as-is, where-is.
Many timed auctions use automatic extensions when bids arrive near closing, giving active bidders a fair chance to respond. The exact extension rules are disclosed in the terms for that auction.
A bid is generally a binding commitment and should not be placed casually. Contact REAL immediately if you believe an error occurred, but do not assume a bid can be removed. The auction-specific terms control.
Payment & removal
A buyer’s premium is an amount added to the winning bid to calculate the purchase price. The applicable percentage and any other charges will be stated in the auction terms before you bid.
Accepted payment methods and deadlines vary by auction. Winning bidders receive an invoice with instructions. Payment must be completed according to those instructions before assets may be released.
Unless the auction specifically states otherwise, the buyer is responsible for packing, labor, loading, tools, equipment, vehicles, transportation, and meeting the published removal deadline.
Shipping availability depends on the auction and the type of asset. Buyers should assume purchases require local pickup unless shipping or a third-party shipping option is specifically stated.
